A Healthy Heart – Did you know?
Did you know that it is estimated that 50% of men over the age of 40 have coronary heart disease?
And heart disease kills more Americans each year than any other disease or illness ( Journal of the American Medical Association).
Sometimes this disease is called the silent killer, because there are no symptoms. Factors such as cigarette smoking, elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, advancing age, abdominal obesity and physical inactivity are components that can be made better, however, you have to get tested in order to know or assess your situation.
Today, I was very fortunate to participate in a study being conducted by the Healthy Heart Foundation for alumni NFL players.
The purpose of the study is to determine whether NFL players have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease than men of the same age in the general US population. Dr. Archie Roberts, a well-known heart surgeon and former QB overcame a stroke years ago and figured out how to pay it forward by helping his fellow NFL comrades. A special Thanks to Dr. Roberts, Lisa P and all the volunteers at U Penn Hospital, NFLPA and NFL alumni association.
Ladies you already know this, but most men wait until something goes awry before they undergo any tests. I am not sure why our leg has to be falling off or we need to have something to scare the pants of us before we will seek medical attention. Donna G ” my passionate and very thoughtful” technician whose cancer is in remission, called that a double duh! Donna wonders why people don’t think and take better care of themselves.
Personally, my motto is to work on your health before a crisis. If the men of the NFL are taking tests, please follow our lead and do the same.
The followings tests were performed on the participants -
Electrocardiogram
Body Composition Measurements
Echocardiogram
Extensive Blood Testing
Blood Pressure Determinations
CT Calcium Score of the Heart
Carotid Ultrasound Exam
At-Home Sleep Apnea Test
Doctor’s exit interview
These tests are more extensive than a typical annual physical. When was your last one? Do you know your blood pressure numbers? Do you know your cholesterol numbers? Are you exercising 3-5 times a week?
My exit interview with the doctor was very informative. He made it clear that there is a correlation between obesity, blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease. He went on to explain that the normal range should be less than 130/85. He added that – percentage of body fat for a healthy female age 40 -59 is 23% – 34% and for men in the same age bracket is 11% – 21%. You gotta find out your numbers – schedule a test today!
Oh by the way, I was happy to get my body composition number despite the fact that its double from 21 years ago. (Who ever comes up with both numbers, will win a gift card)

Hey Ziz
I’m certainly looking forward to hearing how your results end up when you get them all back. I’m sure you’re someone who really takes care of themselves given you have all this awesome knowledge to share with us

Hey Ziz… that’s important information to be aware of – particularly as we get older.
When we’re young, we tend not to be overly concerned about those stats. Once I got away from thinking that I would live forever, I started (albeit a little after the fact)to take better care of my health.
I not happy with the “tale of the tape”, but I am starting to see the BMI (and my waist) get smaller. As for you my friend, I’m gonna guess at 8% and now 16%.

Chris,
We’re in the second-half of our lives – its good that we realize how we have to keep our bodies well maintained – sorta like that oil change at every 3000 miles.
Its why I enjoy fasting each year – it gives the stomach and the digestive system a much needed break. Gabriel Cousens, M.D. states that”fasting in a larger context, means to abstain from that which is toxic to mind, body and soul. A way to understand this is that fasting is an elimination of physical, emotional and mental toxins from our organs, rather than simply cutting down on or stopping food intake.

Hi Ziz,
This was really fascinating. I will be interested to see the results of the study. It is important to be seen by your doctor and to make healthy choices. It is great that you are so committed to your own health and the health of others.
I am sure that many people will benefit from the information that you share.

Nancy,
I read a stat the other day that said every 38 seconds someone dies from heart disease – that is crazy so I look at health as critical factor to quality of life and I try and work on it every day b/c I want a high quality of life. I thank GOD for my current health!

Ziz,
These test are very important. I noticed that my blood pressure is higher when I am at the doctor’s office. I keep a check on it at home and it is normal, but at the doctor’s office it is really high.
I have an appointment scheduled to check my cholesterol it was good the last time, so I believe it will be good this time, too.

Jaden,
I can see why your numbers would be higher in the office versus outside the doctor’s office. Cholesterol is a complex issue and we all need to know our numbers.

Hello Aziz, it’s surprising how sometimes people who are very fit, can still have a heart attack. My Dad had a massive heart attack when he was 55, he used to ride his bike a lot, run up and down the stairs at work (a lot of steep stairs), never smoked and only had an occasional glass of wine, wasn’t overweight. The doctors thought it was most likely due to stress and worry.
Thank goodness for his triple bipass surgery, and he’s still fit now, nearly 30 years later!

Ziz,
Thanks for sharing this information. A lot of guys are good at taking care of their cars and making sure it gets “regular check ups”. They understand the value it holds and know that if the car gets tuned up, has regular oil changes and such that it extends the life and value of the car. I wonder why we don’t think of that about our bodies?
I appreciate all the information. To your health!

Don,
Good question – because or bodies sure do lets us know when we need some tweaking. I have finally gotten back into my exercise routine and by me not exercising consistently and just sitting at a desk – my back and hips got out of alignment. Now that I am back into a routine, lo and behold my back and hip are feeling better – doh!
We need to take care of ourselves!
